California
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009CALIFORNIA to most outsiders is synonymous with Hollywood, Leggoland, Disneyland Resort, Gold Coast, Musical & Television production and Historical Fun places. Not always known, are the Natural Beauty of State Parks, Magnificent Beaches, Bays, Diving sites, Water Sports, Islands, Farmlands and Arts and Culture opportunities available to the tourist.
Basic Tourist Regions are; the Northern California – The San Francisco area, Central California – Santa Barbara and Southern California – Los Angeles, San Diego and more. Twelve more sub-areas each with its own attractions are; Central Coast, Central valley, Desert, Gold County, High Sierra, Inland Empire, Los Angeles County, North Coast, Orange County, San Diego County, San Francisco Bay Area, and Shasta Cascade.
San Francisco Bay area covers more than fifty square miles. There are an abundance of sights and things to do. See the magnificent Bridge spanning the bay, The City and its nearby Silicon Valley and Napa Valley Vineyards. From the Arts and Cultural, Outdoors, Sports, Night Life, Shopping, to Wellness Centers and most of all…..Wining, Dining and Chilling-out where you may spot the beautiful or famous from Hollywood.
Central Coast, from Oxnard in the south, Santa Barbara, Santa Mario to Salinas in the north, has over one thousand miles of stunning Pacific beaches along its coastline. Swimming, surfing and body boarding, diving in the north near the Mexican border are experiences never to be forgotten. Camping, fishing, hiking and sea wildlife viewing above and below water are delightful experiences. Many film stars and ‘moguls’ live in or visit the area. You can hardly go anywhere in the coastal area without ‘stumbling over’ one of them!
Central Valley is a picture of agricultural farmland. Spring blossoms or fall leaves delight the viewer. A great place to stock up with wines, tomatoes, cheeses and vegetables. Towns like Bakersfield, Stockton and Merced have country music, concerts and many other attractions.
Desert Area with Palm Springs as its metropolis can be aptly described by the oxymoron, “Less is more”! Desert areas with their wide vistas of sand dunes, distant rocky outcrops, “Soothe the soul” in their naked beauty. Places like Death Valley, Mojave, Joshua Tree and several smaller National Parks offer a stunning experience to ‘wild nature’ lovers. Much of the land is for military training use and therefore there has California’s International Airport close to the Edwards Air force Base. Around Palm Springs lie ‘jewels’ to visit, Smoke Tree Ranch, El Gallito in Cathedral City, Living Desert and El Paseo in Palm Desert, Scenic drives, San Bernardino National Forest, Diamond Valley Lake, Wineries, Resorts, Spa’s and more.
Gold Country, long associated with the Californian Gold Rush of the previous century has ‘new gold’ in tourism. Visits to Auburn, Nevada City and Angel’s Camp’s museums will take you back into the gold rush times. Instead of doing the back breaking work of panning for traces of gold, the water sports now offer a more pleasurable time on the rivers, or in the Sierra foothills. Capital and river port, Sacramento, has stunning river side boating and deep water channel, historical sites, parks and modern entertainment for all.
The High Sierra as its name indicates is the ultimate in mountain scenery and winter sporting activities. Home to the world famous; Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks (With the oldest trees on Earth), Ski Resorts and Summer Arts and Music Festivals. With no capital of its own, access is easiest from Sacramento in the West, Carson City and Reno in the North. Mammoth skiing and winter sports activities a re legendary.
Inland Empire with San Bernardino, Riverside and Ontario are rapidly expanding cities within an old wine, agricultural, mountain, desert and lakeside ski-tourism history. Why? River side-San Bernardino has with its numerous universities and colleges has a highly educated work force. It is leading the way in job-creation and offering development of vast expanses of land at very competitive prices and sophisticated tourist attraction developments.
Los Angeles, LA as it’s known to the world of Moviegoers and TV viewers needs little introduction. The site and inspiration of countless movies, the city and area ‘has a magical life of its own’! Arts and culture center with so much packed in that weeks are needed to cover only a few exhibits, festivals or museums. Famous beaches of Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice and Long Beach are each unique in their attractions. Theme Parks like Disneyland and Water world. Golfing facilities are big, from the mundane to the magnificent ‘A’ designs. Nighttime entertainment abounds, with theaters, music, dance, dining or speciality bars.
Santa Monica and Malibu State Parks offer outdoor enthusiasts all the hiking, biking and canoeing to satisfy that stored up energy and explorative instinct. For absolute relaxation the innumerable Spa’s offer the ultimate in spoiling and pampering. No visit would be complete without ‘the Shopping Experience’. Malls, Specialty Shops and Department Stores have ‘everything and more’ to offer. Take home your ‘loot’, to remind you of a wonderful experience!
North Coast is where you find closeness with nature. The magnificent redwoods in the State Parks, forests, and trails are awe inspiring. The wines of the Sonora are outstanding. Art and culture is not neglected, regular events of music, festivals and art shows draw thousands. Quiet beaches, coves and inland lakes ensure some privacy. Sporting facilities like, golf, NASCAR and of course, Spa’s are favorites, not to be outdone, over 200 wineries in the area offer virtually unlimited wine tasting, dining and buying opportunities.
Orange County is much more than citrus country. The oranges have been largely replaced with arts, leisure and entertainment. Beaches, coves and brilliant seascapes, desert and birdlife delight nature lovers. Challenging and pristine golf courses add to the outdoors fun. Wine an innovative cuisine, with culinary delights from local to all over the world.
San Diego has tens of miles and more miles, of sunny beaches, mostly unspoilt by developments, a laid back lifestyle the envy of inland city dwellers. Yet, in the heart of the city, Balboa Park offers, hiking and biking for the energetic. Amongst the ninety odd golf courses is the famous Torrey Pines, home to the 2008 US Open. San Diego has its fair share of nightlife with bars, theme restaurants and music venues, frequented by many aspiring, past and present movie stars.
Shasta Cascade lies inland, just N/E of San Francisco, is almost California’s ‘best kept secret’.The mighty Mt. Shasta and volcanic Mt. Lassen’s snow capped peaks, hills, lakes and valleys bring skiers, snowboarders and ice skaters to this winter paradise. Lakes and rivers offer some o the best of outdoor adventure activities while Fly fishing in summer, is some of the best in California. The cities of Redding and Chico still exude a charming and relaxed mix of old and modern California. Golf lovers are not neglected, but casual and with great vistas for the ‘natural experience’. As to be expected from a mountain country, breakfast dining and barbecues are a huge affair, yet exotic French, Thai and other Asian foods vie for your taste buds approval. The famed Sierra Nevada Brewery still shows off its ‘ancient copper brewing kettles’ in an active brewery and restaurant combination.
Californian choices of entertainment and leisure are boundless. The choices are mind boggling and the opportunity and desire to visit the whole or particular area are limited only to budget and imagination!
